Mass Flow Measuring System

Objectives

  • Recognize the mass flow measuring system and identify its major components.
  • Explain the function of the mass flow measuring system.

Why Are Mass Flow Measuring Systems Needed?

Fast and accurate density and flow readings are critical to many industrial processes. You'll find MFMS in all sorts of industries, including

  • Oilfield cementing
  • Chemical Manufacturing
  • Food Production

The Major Components

There are two major components to the Mass Flow Measuring System:

  • Transmitter: The transmitter contains the wiring and circuitry to transmit the data from the sensors.
  • Body: This asymmetrical tube contains the measuring equipment that senses the flow and mass. It is connected to the system by a flange at each end.

What Does it Do?

The MFMS is capable of measuring the mass flow rate of a range of fluids, including cement slurry, cleaning agents, oils, vinegar, and even mayonnaise!

It can also be used to measure the density of the fluid (specific gravity - mass/mass of water).

Mass flow rate and density are measured independently of each other.
