Introduction to Piston Pumps

In this lesson, we explain basic piston pumping functions...

...and list common causes of piston pump wear.

Piston Pumps

The piston pump is a versatile pump that efficiently reacts to high pressure, makes refinements to the flow rate based on the load, and/or limits the torque or horsepower required for the prime mover.

While less efficient than vane pumps due to internal leakage, piston pumps perform well at high pressures in systems with sudden pressure spikes.

Piston pumps can be more expensive and complex than other types of pumps, as most have at least one form of pump control.

Piston pumps are also used in hydrostatic drives (closed loops) for machines that need efficient variable speed and reversible motion capability for hydraulic motors.
